Karl Sanderson, Head of Cross-Industry Learning

Karl is Head of Cross-Industry Learning at the UK’s Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA), formerly also Head of Assurance. His portfolio involves sponsoring engagement between the UK’s nuclear industry and other sectors, in order to share insights across the decommissioning landscape.

Prior to joining the NDA, Karl steered a variety of upstream oil & gas mega-projects ranging in size from US$3 to $50 Billion, for deployment in Angola, Kazakhstan, the US Gulf of Mexico, and the Danish sector of the North Sea, on behalf of operators such as Chevron, Total and Maersk Oil. His experience covers the full range of mega-project maturation, from concept through engineering and construction to operations.

Before focusing on the energy sector, Karl was a management consultant and entrepreneur, having been a Partner at marchFIRST -a global eCommerce consultancy, and prior to that a decade at Accenture.  Consequently, he has experience across a wide range of industries, and has often been involved in helping blue-chip organisations navigate the most challenging of circumstances.  He was a founding member of a number of high-tech start-ups and consultancies and has held office as managing director and company secretary.

Peter Orr, Nuclear Regulator and Decommissioning Programme Manager at Environment Agency

Peter John Orr is a Nuclear Regulator and Decommissioning and Clean-up programme manager at the Environment Agency. He has over 20 years of experience in nuclear regulation, radioactive waste management, soil and groundwater protection, environmental assessment and modeling in support of sustainable strategies to clean up the UK nuclear legacy. He works with partners by providing leadership, technical direction and oversight to multiple collaborative projects. Peter’s expertise includes facilitating and enabling innovative techniques and approaches to decommissioning and remediation activities. Peter earned a Bachelor’s of Science and Master’s degree in Environmental Science from Lancaster University. He is a chartered member of the Society for Radiological Protection.

Martin Grey, Asset Management Specialist at NDA

Martin is NDA’s Asset Management Specialist working collaboratively across the UK businesses and sites. As a.Major Projects Authority Gateway Medium Risk Review Team Leader and High Risk Reviewer he has evaluated a range of programmes within Highways, Government, House of Lords, Defence and Education.

 

Martin has been leading the UK Civil Nuclear Sector drive to improve the strategic management of assets for the last 10 years to enable the decommissioning of the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority Facilities.  That has involved, from inception, collaborating with other industry sectors and safety and environmental regulators to identify and share good practice to the benefit of NDA and its businesses.

Having worked in the nuclear sector since leaving school Martin has held a number of technical and management roles including oversight of the safe management of the Sellafield Complex in West Cumbria. Working from NDA has included oversight of £100M’s contracts and assurance of subcontracting consistent with Cabinet Office requirements. Sustained success has been achieved through implementing a programme based change management approach.

Martin is a Director of the UK Chapter of The Institute of Asset Management responsible for outreach and is Chair of the Cumbria Branch.

Graeme Rankin, Head of Transformation Integration and Benchmarking at Sellafield Ltd

Graeme has worked in the nuclear industry for nearly 40 years, in both the UK and the United States. He has been plant manager for the Highly Active Liquor Evaporation and Storage facility at Sellafield, worked in decommissioning high hazard facilities at Sellafield and on redundant nuclear weapons production facilities in the United States. As well as using his experience and expertise on nuclear sites, he also worked for the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA) for 10 years. During this time we was the contract lead for Sellafield and then responsible for the NDA’s competition programme for parent body organisations. He is currently back at Sellafield working on its transformation change programme.
