Flashback: International Conference 2019

In 2019, around 500 international decommissioning operators and organisations attended our International Conference - with representation from Oil & Gas, Nuclear, Defence, Process & Renewable sectors.

The three day event took place in April 2019, hosting a Grand Networking Dinner, International Keynote Conferences, LLWR Integrated Waste Management Conference and an Exhibition.

The International Conference at Manchester Central, saw a Keynote Session from Rt Hon Lord Hutton of Furness and Professor John Fyfe. Professor Fyfe is Business Advisor to International Government and his presentation was concerned with ‘Effects on the Community of Decom Sites – An International Perspective.’

The Far East Session of the Conference welcomed Roger Cowton, Head of External Affairs at Sellafield Limited and Naoto Yagi, Head of Nuclear at TEPCO. Hwee-Soo Jun from Korea Hydro in South Korea also presented on ‘Korea’s Nuclear Decommissioning Plans and Policies,’ closing the Far East Session of the Conference.

The following session focused on decommissioning challenges within Europe. Dr Bernhard Bugenhagen from TUV Nord opened the session with ‘Nuclear Decommissioning and Remediation: Begin with the end!’ He was then followed by David Saul from Cyclife EDF with ‘An overview of the Berkeley, Chapelcross and Dounreay projects.’

The UK session began with Clive Anderson, Managing Director Programme and Project Management at WYG Group. He presented from the Defence sector on ‘Challenges Presented in Decommissioning Camp Bastion.’ Dennis Thompson of AECOM and Karl Sanderson from NDA continued the UK session with presentations on ‘The Power of partnerships: the key to overcoming complex and uncertain job scopes,’ and ‘Cross Sectoral Working Update – NDA/OGA,’ respectively.

These speakers were then present at a drinks reception, allowing delegates to make meaningful connections across the industry. In 2020, we expect our International Conference to be even bigger with prominent, industry leaders presenting and networking throughout the day.
